Every place in Kyoto Unknown
Twenty-six places in Kyoto, chosen by people who live here. No star ratings, no review-aggregator scores, no algorithmic recommendations. Just the places we actually go when we want a quiet morning, a long lunch, or somewhere to end up after dark.
What's here is divided across six neighbourhoods — Higashiyama, Central, Arashiyama, Fushimi, North, and the mountains beyond — and twelve categories from temples and shrines to izakaya, rooftop bars, and the kissaten that have been playing jazz vinyl since the 1970s. Two-thirds of these places see fewer than fifty visitors a day. Most aren't on the standard Kyoto itinerary. A few are well known but worth knowing how to visit properly, because the route most people take is the wrong one.
Every place has been visited by us personally, repeatedly, over the past year. Prices, opening hours, and access notes reflect what we found. The same data lives in the Kyoto Unknown app, which is free forever — no ads, no tracking, no account, no paid tier ever. Use whichever surface suits the moment.

About this list
The places here are chosen for one reason: we'd send a friend to them. There's no paid placement, no affiliate links, no ranking algorithm. If a place stops being good — staffing changes, ownership changes, the food drops — it comes off this list and out of the app. The list is curated, not crowdsourced.
Every page links to the place's official website where one exists, and gives walking directions from the nearest station. The Nearby Places component at the bottom of each page surfaces three or four others within a 15-minute walk, so you can build an afternoon out of one good first stop.
Looking for somewhere specific? Read the blog for guides organised around occasions — Golden Week, Aoi Matsuri, an evening out, a day trip — or try our independent travel itineraries for 2, 3, and 5-day trips.
Open in the app for mood-based browsing, offline maps, and the Kyoto-ben phrasebook.
