Hozugawa River Boat Ride
保津川下り
At a glance
A 16km descent through the Hozukyo gorge on a flat-bottomed wooden boat, three boatmen working in relay with bamboo poles and oars, navigating calm pools, rock formations, and the odd stretch of rapids. The gorge is almost entirely undeveloped: tall forested mountains, ancient rocks, herons on the banks, and at some point the Sagano train passing on the hillside above you.
Getting there
Departs from Kameoka — best combined with Sagano Tram (train out, boat back to Arashiyama).
Best time to visit
