Enryakuji
延暦寺
At a glance
Founded in 788 by the monk Saicho, 150 temple buildings scattered across the forested summit of Mount Hiei. Sits on the Shiga side of the border but most Kyoto locals will claim it as their own.
Getting there
Eizan Railway to Yase-Hieizanguchi, then cable car and ropeway to summit. Enryakuji is a short walk from the ropeway station.
Best time to visit
Morning. Combine with Mount Hiei for a full day. Spectacular in autumn.
